The Nokia 5110 was released in 1998, and to hear the members of the TechnoBuffalo staff that actually carried one talk about it, it was the greatest phone ever released.
Jon Rettinger has recently been counting down his 10 favorite phones of all time, and I thought it would be fun to dig up some of the commercials from them for Flashback Friday. In particular, the 5110 was known by many model numbers all over the world depending on which bands it supported, and it is quite often confused with the 5100 which had a significantly different look. What this phone is probably best known for, however, was the ability to change its faceplate. You could customize it with a variety of colors, and of course sports teams and universities got in on the fun as well so you could always show your support.
While the 5110 epitomizes a “dumb phone,” although it did feature the Snake game, it holds a near and dear spot in many people’s hearts. Sure you may want to laugh at it now, but believe me, it was an essential part of the history of phones to get us to where we are today.
