Mike Lazaridis

Once upon a time Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie were the leaders of Research In Motion (now BlackBerry), one of the largest smartphone makers on earth.

As profits and market share slipped, however, the company began to restructure. Jim Balsillie, a co-founder and co-CEO with Mike Lazaridis, left the company a year ago. Now, following BlackBerry’s most recent earnings report, Mike Lazaridis—who remained a member of the board—is leaving the company, too. Lazaridis’ last day will be May 1.

“Mike revolutionized the mobile communications industry and is widely recognized as one of Canada’s greatest innovators,” BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins said.”He’s played a pivotal role in the last 15 months with the launch of BlackBerry 10. I deeply respect his desire to devote his full-time efforts to his new venture.”

AllThingsD said Lazaridis plans to turn his attention to another company, Quantum Valley Investment.
