The next update for Windows Phone 8, General Distribution Release 2 (GDR2) may include the ability to activate the FM radios laying dormant in some phones. According to sources speaking with The Verge, Microsoft has been trying to get the radios working since the move from Windows Phone 7 to Windows Phone 8, and it appears that the issue has been ironed out.
Currently both the Lumia 820 and Lumia 920 from Nokia both have dormant FM radios in them, and this update will apparently activate them along with a few other selected handsets.
The source also claims that Nokia is going to throw in a few pieces of its own into the firmware update. The biggest one will be a new gesture control that allows users to awaken their phone by performing a double-tap on the screen. Additionally there may also be a flip to silence option.
No firm date has been given as of yet for the release of GDR2, but you should expect it in the coming months.
