The Tomb Raider that’s been taking the gaming world by storm over the last week or so might not have been the original vision birthed by the folks at Crystal Dynamics. Their original idea looks like it was going to be dubbed Tomb Raider: Ascension.
A slew of concept art pieces made their way to DSOGaming.com over the weekend. The folks at that site credit NeoGAF user Larson Conway for the find, but they don’t link to that person’s post.
I reviewed the new Tomb Raider, and I absolutely adored it. One thing that I didn’t mention in that review was the supernatural element of the game. I personally feel that those types of moments in adventure games are pretty special, and I think discussing them in a review hurts their possible appeal for potential gamers.
So, let me just say this: there is some supernatural stuff in Tomb Raider. However, it’s all pretty basic. As this new concept art reveals, Crystal Dynamics was considering a lot more in the way of the supernatural for Tomb Raider. We’ve got demons with weird blade arms and giants that feel like they come from Shadow of the Colossus.
I also especially dig the potential gameplay companion that’s defending a hunkered Lara from a massive giant in one of those art images.
If any of these assets wind up being used in the follow-up to this Tomb Raider relaunch, count me in. I’m already in, but count me in even harder.
