Jason Kilar has finalized that he will leave Hulu at the end of this quarter and that senior vice president of content Andy Forssell will become the acting CEO.
Kilar announced at the end of last year that he would be departing Hulu some time in the first quarter of 2013, and seeing as we’re just weeks away from that time period ending, it makes sense that he has finally made his departure a bit more final. Forssell has been in charging of securing many of Hulu’s content partners, and that means he knows the company pretty well. he seems like a logical choice to take up the role of acting CEO.
Perhaps the more intriguing piece of information in Kilar’s note to the employees was his mention of Disney and News Corp’s plans for the company.
Disney and News Corporation are currently finalizing their forward-looking plans with Hulu, and the senior team has been working closely with them in that process.
As was revealed earlier this month, both companies have been toying with the idea of buying the other one out of the service, and this cryptic little message does make you wonder what may be going on behind the scenes.
Whatever the case may be, Kilar is on his way out, and he has a lot to be proud of based on the performance of Hulu last year. With partners apparently in a struggle to control the company, it’s anyone’s guess what Forssell will have to deal with.
