Shigeru Miyamoto Producing Pikmin Animated Shorts for 3DS

Pikmin 3

Nobody knows the horrors of watching ill-equipped film and animation studios mishandle and destroy his most precious of creations more than Nintendo guru Shigeru Miyamoto. So when the man decides he wants to explore one of his more understated universes through animated briefs, I don’t blame him for wanting to take matters into his own hands,

In an interview with Polygon, Miyamoto has confirmed that Nintendo is currently working on creating animated shorts taking place in the Pikmin universe. He has always declared a strong affection for the carrot like creatures and the strange Captain Olimar, and now he seems to have found a perfect outlet to expand his universe beyond the boundaries of the games.

” I didn’t want to license our characters out to someone else to create films. Instead, since I used to draw four-panel comics when I was younger, I thought it would be fun to bring a four-panel comic approach to creating video content, so we started work on these Pikmin videos.”

Although Miyamoto hasn’t thought of the Nintendo 3DS as being used for more than just a platform for video games, Nintendo does have a decent little idea on their hands to generate a little cash and expand into the realm of entertainment distribution. The videos were originally intended to create hype for the upcoming Pikmin 3 on the Nintendo Wii U, but they could be used for so much more should they become popular enough.

“They’ll be released sometime before the release of┬áPikmin 3. Possibly as a Nintendo video. If they’re popular we could consider selling them.”

And if sales pick up for the Pikmin franchise, no doubt Nintendo would be more than happy to sell cheap and fun cartoons based on their more prolific series. How much cash flow could a weekly Mario or Legend of Zelda cartoon generate through the Nintendo 3DS? At the right price, I would love an easy 10-25 second cartoon each week starring my favorite childhood icons, directly from Nintendo to he palm of my hands.

Anybody else want to see possible weekly cartoons from Nintendo directly through the 3DS or Wii U?

The cartoons are expected to be released before Pikmin 3’s arrival on the Nintendo Wii U sometime this spring. No official date has been announced yet.
