Microsoft has reversed its decision to keep Office 2013 locked to just one computer for life effective immediately.
Last month Microsoft announced that the Office 2013 was locked to one computer forever. If you were to purchase a new computer you would be unable to transfer Office to that device, and that was it. The only way you would be allowed to do a reinstall was if the original computer failed under warranty.
Apparently consumers were vocal enough int heir displeasure over this concept as Microsoft announced this morning that effective immediately it was changing the policy.
In a post on the Office News blog, the company announced that you can now transfer the software package to a new computer once every 90 days. While anyone who has purchased the software already has agreed to the old terms, those are now null-and-void, and future releases of the software will include the following wording:
Can I transfer the software to another computer or user? You may transfer the software to another computer that belongs to you, but not more than one time every 90 days (except due to hardware failure, in which case you may transfer sooner). If you transfer the software to another computer, that other computer becomes the “licensed computer.” You may also transfer the software (together with the license) to a computer owned by someone else if a) you are the first licensed user of the software and b) the new user agrees to the terms of this agreement before the transfer. Any time you transfer the software to a new computer, you must remove the software from the prior computer and you may not retain any copies.
While the general theory was that lockdown of Office 2013 was Microsoft’s attempt to get consumers to move over to the subscription based Office 365, it appears that they are just not yet ready to give up working with software as they have for decades.
