The Last of Us Developer Diary Explains the Origins of the Infected

The Last of Us is set up up to be one of the biggest games of the year, and developer Naughty Dog has done everything it can to prove to gamers that this is not just another zombie game. Starting with the walking monstrosities themselves, the infected are not zombies at all, but rather they are humans covered with massive infections covered with spores.

In the latest developer diary from Naughty Dog titled “Hush,” team members explain the origins of the plague which wiped out humanity. The fungus spreads throughout the globe as airborne spores created from the remains of dead infections. Should other humans breathe in the dust these abominations dissolve into after death, they become infected.

And most zombie fans think being bitten is the easiest mode of infection.

Naughty Dog is wisely playing up this “not a zombie game” very well. They’ve jumped ahead of the curve realizing zombies were on the way out when they announced this game, and they are tossing aside a lot of tropes that come with the genre. Most importantly, they have a clear cut origin story of how humans came to be this way, breaking the biggest convention which ties most stories together.

Also included in the footage are original concept art and a few new glimpses at the gameplay. The Last of Us doesn’t raise its head too often these days, but when it does, it never ceases to impress.

The Last of Us was recently delayed wth a June 14, 2013 release date, giving it a huge advantage with so little competition during that time of the year. It will be a PlayStation 3 exclusive.
