BioShock Infinite and a Brief History of Columbia

by Joey Davidson | January 28, 2013January 28, 2013 5:30 pm PDT

Irrational Games has released a new background video for BioShock Infinite done up in the style of an old classroom documentary. The clip gives a brief history of the floating city of Columbia, including its debut to the world, and asks whether or not it’s “a Modern Day Icarus?”

Of course, the “Modern Day Icarus” headline links Columbia to the famed character in Greek mythology. Icarus, in case you forgot, was the son of a master carpenter and a citizen of Crete. In an attempt to flee the city, Icarus had his father make a set of wings out of wax and feathers so that he could fly away. Against his father’s warning, Icarus flew too close to the sun, his wings melted and he fell to earth.

Is Columbia flying too close to the sun for its own good? I assume so. Afterall, what’s BioShock without a brilliant society that collapses in on its own ideals?

BioShock Infinite will launch for the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on March 26th, 2013. We’ll have more on it as it comes.
