What’s a Mario game you can’t play with your friends? Well, Super Mario 64, but outside of that, I’m pretty sure every other Mario game has had some form of local multiplayer mode. I might be wrong, who knows?

Add Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon to that list. The Nintendo 3DS sequel to the GameCube launch title will have “a brand new local multiplayer mode,” or so says the official Nintendo website. No mention of multiplayer has been made about the game in all the months of hype showing it off, so this comes as quite a surprise.

“With so many new places to explore, all new ways to capture ghosts, and a brand new local multiplayer mode, Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon is another star turn for Mario’s heroic brother…”

Confusingly enough, the games description still claims “No. of Players: 1 player.” I’ll put more faith in the text description for now, because why else would they write it if it didn’t a multiplayer mode?

The original Luigi’s Mansion did not have multiplayer either, but being a huge fan, I can see potential here for a lot of handheld wireless multiplayer fun. Racing your friends to trap ghosts, or Team Deathmatch modes with Luigi and ghost controlled teams. All of that sounds like fun.

Who wants to bet that Toads and Yoshis will somehow be involved in the ruckus as well? Maybe even Mario will make an appearance. I just bought my Nintendo 3DS for Fire Emblem: Awakening, and I’m more than excited to get sucked back into the Nintendo library. Please excuse my giddiness.

Nintendo has yet to comment on the quote from their article, but expect them to do so shortly with the game’s release just around the corner. Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon will be released exclusively for the Nintendo 3DS this March 24th, 2013.
