Galaxy S IV Will Have Qi Standard Wireless Charging

How much longer until wires are a thing of the past? Seriously, my apartment is crammed with wires dangling lazily from behind every piece of furniture not bolted to the floor. Wirelessly charging phones is not a new technology, and Samsung will be sticking to the tried and true Qi standard.

The Galaxy S IV, rumored to be released later this year, will be chargeable up to 4cm from the energy source. A report fromĀ DDaily claims that Samsung was able to create its own system that uses a new technology based on resonant magnetic coupling. This method of transferring power through the air is effective up to 1-2 meters, however, Samsung chose not to make it commercially available because it would cost too much.

The coil that allows the power to be transferred can be attached into the back of the phone. However, like most phones out there, the wireless function won’t be the default method for charging. The charging pad will be sold separately, although we don’t know how much it will cost.
