Fire Emblem: Awakening finally has a demo available through the Nintendo 3DS eShop for those still on the fence about the series. If brutal battles and brilliant tactics are not your forte, but you still have a casual interest in the games, then I suggest you try before you buy. The Fire Emblem series is one of Nintendo’s best, but it is not for everyone.
If you’re just getting started, and don’t wish to learn by trial through fire, Nintendo has a new helpful video which lays out all the basics. Picking proper units in battle, moving them about the map, attacking and making sure your enemy stays dead. Most of this is common sense to long time veterans of the series, but you gotta remember that Nintendo expands to more than just their hardcore fanbase these days.
However, this trailer shows off the series’ newest element, support attacks. Fire Emblem: Awakening is the first game in the series which allows two characters to approach enemies at the same time, giving more strategical choices on which units to pair together. Romance, character relations and friendships play a huge part in the game, so characters’ personal story arcs will also affect who they will be most effectively paired with.
If you’re intimidated by the complexity of the game, turned off by the fact that it’s not as simple as a Mario platformer, and need to kick the tires before a purchase, be sure to give the demo a try.
Fire Emblem: Awakening will be available on the Nintendo 3DS on February 4th, 2013.
