Report: Sony’s Studios Working on PlayStation 4 Games

Another day, another next generation console rumor. This time around, Develop claims to have sources that say several of Sony’s first party studios are developing games for the PlayStation 4. Develop’s sources would not say which of Sony‘s 16 first-party studios were working on games. They did, however, say that production for these titles was […]

Sony at Work on PlayStation 4

Don’t expect an official announcement or unveiling anytime soon, but Sony has admitted that they are working on the PlayStation 4 (or whatever they’ll be calling the PS3‘s follow-up). The news came during a fiscal call yesterday from Sony‘s Executive Vice President and Chief financial Officer Masaru Kato. Kato owned up to the fact that work on the […]

Sony’s PlayStation 4 to use AMD Graphics Tech?

A recent report from Forbes has it that Sony is working on a brand new home gaming console, we’ll call it the PlayStation 4 for ease of recognition. Forbes indicates that former employees of AMD have said that Sony’s upcoming console will make use of AMD’s graphics technology. As a point of note for discussion’s sake, Sony currently […]

Hiroshi Sakamoto, Sony’s Home Entertainment Vice President, may have gone against the typical protocol of the major hardware manufacturer he represents during CES 2013. In an interview with, Sakamoto suggested that Sony might be planning to announce the PlayStation 4 before E3 2013.

The quotes from Hiroshi Sakamoto were originally published in Spanish, so forgive the loose language guidelines that come from Google Translate. In spite of the translation, the message is clear.

“But our friends are preparing PlayStation. I can only say that we are focused on the E3 gaming event, scheduled for June. Announcement may be in that minute or even earlier in May

…In that time we expect to deliver great news, but we must wait until May at least.

The bold emphasis is my own. Sakamoto indicates that Sony might do a pre-E3 announcement, as some companies have recently taken to, in order to drop word of the PlayStation 4. Nintendo did it with the Nintendo 3DS two years ago.

Why would a company do that? This is based purely on inference, but I’d assume Sony wants some dedicated limelight for the new console. If they announce the machine at E3, there’s a chance it could be drowned out by news of something different. By announcing the console earlier, Sony generates a level of hype going into the show.

Of course, I personally prefer an element of surprise from the pressers I attend or watch from afar. I’ve never been a fan of pre-announcements.

We’ll have more on the next PlayStation as it comes. CVG
