Samsung to Show Off 5.5-inch Flexible Smartphone Screen at CES

Samsung’s display unit is reportedly preparing to show off its 5.5-inch flexible smartphone display during this year’s Consumer Electronics Show early next month. The AMOLED screen allegedly has a 1280 x 720-pixel resolution and will likely be used in Samsung’s future smartphones and, possibly, tablets. The screen’s aren’t capable of being rolled up, CNET said, but are more likely being demoed to show the durability of the displays. If a screen can bend, after all, it’s likely more resistant to fracturing if dropped.

This isn’t the first time Samsung has demoed its flexible display technology. The company has already developed 4.5-inch screens, although we haven’t seen them used in portable devices just yet. Hopefully we’ll learn more about when the new technology will be included in smartphones and what sort of benefits consumers will see from the end product. We’ll be sure to try to bring you more information from the show floor in just a few short weeks.
