Flashback Friday: CES 1981

Flashback FridayLet’s travel back in time nearly 32 years and take a look at what was on display at CES.

This segment comes from a late night show in Florida in the 1980s called The NightLife Show, and this particular clip features some coverage of CES 1981. What were the hot topics of discussion at the show? Well, the interviews are a bit … odd … but we hear some discussions about whether or not Beta is truly losing the fight against VHS. And, look, it’s a visit from our old friend, the Video Disc! Hey, buddy! How’ve you been? Oh … still a completely failed format. Well … um … not forgotten, at least?

Oddly enough, these are the only two parts in this clip; but, as the show was trying to focus on video related stories, it makes sense.

Surprisingly, in the decades since this was shot, things haven’t changed all that much at CES. You still have executives that will tell you how their company is flourishing no matter how much evidence may be out there to the contrary, and you also have demonstrations done by folks who can’t go off their script no matter what you ask. All that being said, it’s still an awesome experience that none of us at TechnoBuffalo would trade for anything.

Speaking of which – you know I love to tie this series into current events – have you entered our Win a Trip to CES contest? You could see a demonstration in person of the Video Disc player … or, well, whatever the current hot new video format on display is.
