RIM Launches BlackBerry Messenger 7 with BBM Voice

Research In Motion announced BlackBerry Messenger 7 on Monday, which includes a new BBM Voice feature for free Wi-Fi calls to other BBM contacts. BBM Voice has been available to BlackBerry owners in beta form since November 14, but it’s now fully functional and out of the testing phase.

“BBM began as a convenient and effective business messaging tool, and today it is an essential part of daily communications for customers around the world,” RIM’s vice president of BBM and Social Communications said. “Now, with BBM version 7, customers have a new option: they can text and talk with their BBM contacts near and far, for free. With the integrated experience, we extend the core features of reliable, real-time engagement to include voice calling and take BBM to the next level.”

The update also includes 16 new emoticons, group and contact sync and more. We’ve also heard rumors that RIM is working on a BBM Video client, which we presume will launch in tandem with BlackBerry 10 in January.
