Oh, the Sony Trinitron … you once had the entire world at your feet.
During Tim Cook’s Rock Center interview on this past Thursday, he discussed Apple’s “intense interest” in televisions. During that portion of the interview, the amazing Sony Trinitron line was mentioned, and I thought, “Whoa, there’s a name I haven’t thought of in ages!” And this of course led me to writing it up for Flashback Friday.
There was a time where the Sony Trinitron was really about the only name in TV sets. You would barely even think of any other set when you were shopping for a TV, but as with all great companies and brands, it faded as younger, hungrier companies surpassed its technology and left it in the dust. Funny, this kind of sounds like what was discussed on this week’s episode of Tech on the Range.
All great brands will shine brightly for a while, and then fade away. Could the same happen to Apple some day? One of my personal favorite quotes in life was said by Edmund Burke, “Those who don’t know history are doomed to repeat it.” One has to wonder if Apple has ever taken a history lesson.
