Steve Ballmer Says Windows Phone 8 Sales Have Quadrupled Over This Time Last Year

Reception for handsets running Microsoft’s new Windows Phone 8 OS has been good thus far, translating into four times as many sales compared to this time last year. According to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, the company’s renewed mobile approach “is off to a great start” after only a few weeks of availability, which is of no surprise to us after handling the Lumia 920 and HTC Windows Phone 8X.

The added flare of faster hardware and sharper screens was always going to be a boost for Microsoft, and Windows Phone 8’s many new features seem to be of real interest to consumers. Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android still command the brunt of the U.S.’s marketshare — and indeed worldwide — but we wouldn’t be surprised to see Windows Phone steadily climb up the marketshare ladder over the next year.
