Dennis van Schie, the sales and marketing head of Sony Mobile recently sat down for an interview with Financial Times Deutschland and said that his company has a new smartphone up its sleeves. The exec said he believes the new smartphone will be able to compete head-to-head with Apple’s iPhone 5 and Samsung’s Galaxy S III when it is unveiled, but didn’t exactly say when it will hit the market, how much it will cost, or what sort of features it will pack. Sony’s smartphones, especially those in the U.S., have been rather lackluster recently.
Another Sony spokesperson speaking to the news outlet said that the phone will be on display at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this January, and again at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona a month later. That suggests that the device probably won’t be on store shelves until March at the earliest.
Van Schie also said that Son’y isn’t entirely against the idea of developing a Windows Phone device – most of its phones currently run Android – and that his company is currently watching Windows Phone closel.y “If it succeeds, we will not be caught off guard,” he said.
