Nokia Unveils Cloud-Based "Here" Mapping Service; iOS Maps App On the Way

During an event in San Francisco today, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop unveiled a new cloud-based mapping service called “Here.” The service will allow users to access Nokia maps across multiple devices, whether it’s a computer, a tablet or a smartphone, and it’s independent of operating system. Using Nokia’s “Here” website, users can find directions, bookmark favorite locations in a “collections” feature or even help Nokia improve its maps by updating information or by creating their own maps.

Nokia also confirmed that it is working on an iOS map application and will provide an SDK for Android developers, too. The map app, however, will need to be approved by Apple before it lands in customer’s hands, AllThingsD said, and it’s unclear when it will eventually launch.
