XCOM: Enemy Unknown has been tearing up the critics’ charts this year, and Firaxis is looking to keep this thing moving with two DLC packs.
The first is the Elite Soldier Pack, which came as a pre-order bonus allowing gamers to further customize their units with more powerful weapons and armor. It can be purchased now through Xbox Live, Steam, and the PlayStation Network for $5 or 400 Microsoft Points.
The second pack expands on the single player campaign with three new missions on three new maps as part of the Slingshot Content Pack.
“In this new set of linked Council missions, gamers will meet an enigmatic Triad operative, divert an alien ship’s course, and do battle with the aliens in the skies over China. The Slingshot Content Pack includes three new maps tied to the Council missions, a new playable squad character with a unique story and voice and new character customization options.”
No price or date has been announced yet for the Slingshot Content Pack, but it is the first of two planned single player mission packs.
In regards to selling new missions rather than new items, DLC designer Anada Gupta told Joystiq that missions will provide “a good way of offering new stuff to the player that doesn’t distort the core experience,” and that new weapons will knock the game off balance.
“If we add new weapons and new tech, then we’re expanding the tech tree, and that adds research time – and that’s on a fairly finely balanced pinpoint right now.”
XCOM Enemy Unknown is currently available for the Xbom 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.
