You can never be sure about how a product will perform on the market, particularly one that hasn’t even been announced. But one analyst is confident that Apple’s iPad mini, which is set to be unveiled in less than an hour, will dominate the market the same way its bigger brother has for the past three years.
“Just as Apple has dominated the market for 9.7-inch tablets with its iPad, iPad 2 and new iPad models, the company is posed to rule the market for the 7.x-inch products, driving rapid growth of the segment in 2012, and 2013,” said Rhoda Alexander, director of tablet monitor research for IHS.
Alexander acknowledges other 7-inch competitors as “spirited,” but ultimately feels Apple’s iPad mini will win out with looks and ease of use. Apple’s retail advantage will be an enormous buoy as well.
With the prevalence of smaller tabs, IHS predicts the market will grow to 28 percent of all tablets in 2012, with a rise to 33 percent in 2013. And if Apple manages to meet demand, sales next year “could be off the charts,” Alexander claimed.
