Loot Drop’s Brenda Brathwaite and Tom Hall have pulled the plug on their Kickstarter campaign for their old school RPG Shaker. After only two weeks, the project pulled in roughly $250,000 and was not on course to reach the requested $1 million with another two weeks to go.
The duo blamed a poor pitch that ultimately lead to the death of their project.
“Ultimately, our pitch just wasn’t strong enough to get the traction we felt it needed to thrive. Sure, it may have made it. We could have fought our way to a possibly successful end. In reading your feedback and talking it over internally, however, we decided that it made more sense to kill it and come back with something stronger.”
Kickstarter has been responsible for many of the best grassroots stories of the year. Obsidian Entertainment, Revolution Software, and Double Fine are among many who have enjoyed the success their fan bases provided. Sadly though, many of the games that hit have ended up short in the long run, even promising titles with proven veteran talent behind them like Shaker.
Perhaps $1 million was a bit too much to ask for over only four weeks, and perhaps they just got excited too quickly in reaction to Project Eternity‘s massive success. Kickstarter fatigue could have also played a role, but hopefully Loot Drop will learn from this humbling experience and be back with something a bit more concrete to build a successful campaign on.
