Texas Instruments recently said that it was interested in leaving the mobile chip space to instead focus on other consumer electronics industries, which it said will provide more growth in the long run. Now, a recent report suggests that Amazon is interested in buying TI’s mobile chip business. Israeli news outlet Calcalist said Monday that “Amazon is currently in advanced negotiations to acquire the mobile chips from Texas Instruments.”
If such a deal does go down, Amazon would be entering a space it hasn’t ever been in before. The company could benefit by owning its own chip business, especially for future tablets and smartphones, but it will compete with long time players such as Qualcomm, Intel and other firms.
