Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster isn’t exactly known for his accuracy when predicting iPhone sales. He said the iPhone would ship 6 million units during the first weekend it was on sale, in a worst case scenario, for example, and Apple later confirmed it sold 5 million units. But, he did recently survey 7,700 teens and asked them what phone they own now and what phone they plan to buy next.
It turns out that, according to Munster’s survey, 40 percent of teens currently own an iPhone, and that figure is up six percentage points from the spring and up from 23 percent last fall. Munster also found that 62 percent of teens plan to buy an iPhone in the next six months and 22 percent plan to buy an Android-powered device. 44 percent currently own a tablet, too, up from 29 percent last fall. That’s no surprise, especially with the influx of budget-friendly tablets from Amazon, Google, Samsung and Barnes & Noble. Despite those low-cost offerings, however, 72 percent of teens who own a tablet own an iPad. 74 percent plan to buy an iPad in the next six months, too. Hmm, sounds like the iPad mini could do very well this holiday season.
“We are reaffirmed in our belief that Apple remains the pre-eminent technology brand for teens,” Musnter said, according to AllThingsD, which obtained the survey. “We believe that the launch of the smaller iPad could eventually increase iPad ownership among younger users. Overall, we expect Apple devices to continue to expand in teen ownership and believe that the company is set up well to benefit from loyalty among its younger user base.”
