There’s little doubt, in our minds at least, that Apple is going to unveil a 7.85-inch iPad mini this month.. especially following several leaks and mock-ups of the device. The company hasn’t yet announced a press conference date, but the latest rumors suggest that invites will go out on Oct. 10 for an event on Oct. 17.
Now, a new report from The Wall Street Journal suggests that Apple’s suppliers in Asia have already started mass production of the device. That makes sense, especially if Apple plans to launch it a few weeks after the press conference, sometime in early November.
Two sources speaking with The Wall Street Journal also confirmed the 7.85-inch display size and said AU Optronics and LG will provide the screens for the new tablet. Apple will be entering a crowded market, so pricing is going to be key. Google offers its Asus-made Nexus 7 for $199 and both Barnes & Noble and Amazon have similar priced tablets.
I’m not so sure Apple will price the iPad mini around $199, and its new iPod touch devices start at $299, so pricing might fall in above $300. We’ll know soon enough.
