Google has announced a new, but more importantly, easier way to sync Gmail contacts to your brand new iPhone 5 (and other iOS devices running iOS 5.0 or higher).  Google announced support for CardDAV, an open protocol, which allows iOS Contacts app and Google Contacts to play nice.
