Verizon’s decision to launch Apple’s iPhone 5 unlocked was not a mistake. The carrier on Monday made a statement to the AP reaffirming folks that Verizon has no future plans to lock up the immensely popular handset. Because the iPhone 5 is compatible with GSM bands, users can sample carriers around the globe — or even AT&T and T-Mobile here in the States — and forget about paying hefty international roaming fees. It’s a smart move by the carrier, and is in contrast to a similar situation from last year when Sprint locked the iPhone 4S through a software update.
