Like every fallen empire, MySpace is but a mere fossil of what it once was, relegated to the Web history books of bygone fads. The ancient social network initially shot to prominence in the mid 2000s, but was eventually abandoned in favor of the immensely popular Facebook. But, on the heels of a year-old acquisition by Specific Media Group and Justin Timberlake, the social network is undergoing a major overhaul.
It’s immediately apparent the redesigned project has been influenced by some of today’s more popular online destinations, particularly Tumblr. In fairness, it looks very slick and stylish, and employs the popular left-to-right scrolling design language that many sites employ today. Much of the focus, at least judging from the video, is on the visual experience: big images, block quotes, easily navigable menus and flashy colors.
Additionally, there’s an obvious focus on music; a permanent music bar is implemented on the bottom that easily lets users discover and search for bands and artists. The video repeatedly shows none other than Justin Timberlake when the search function comes into play. There’s quite a bit of information to digest, including artist profiles, trending artist, songs, videos and events.
The new MySpace isn’t live yet, but you can sign up for early access at new.myspace.com. Why wouldn’t you?! Well, with Facebook having nearly one billion users and Google+ rising to prominence, it’s hard to see MySpace wriggling itself in between the two. That’s not to say it won’t get its fair share of traffic. It actually looks pretty fantastic, and might make those with a dormant account fire it back up, if only for the nostalgia factor.
