Sony announced during their TGS conference a third PlayStation 3 model, set to debut this month in the United States.
The model will be available as 250 and 500GB formats in “Charcoal Black” and “Classic White.” The new model is half the size of the original PlayStation 3. Compared to the PS3 Slim, this new edition is 20% smaller and 25% lighter.
Launching September 25 in the U.S., the black 250GB PS3 will be available for $269. The system will be available initially as part of a bundle including Uncharted 3 Game of the Year Edition and a voucher for $30 worth of content for the free-to-play game Dust 514, according to Sony’s Playstation.Blog. The 500GB model will be part of an Assassin’s Creed III bundle. While no price has been mentioned for the bundle, the site indicates it will be $299. The 250GB system will eventually be released as a stand-alone at $249, while the 500GB model will be $299.
In Europe and Hong Kong, gamers can look for a model that, instead of a traditional hard drive, includes 12GB of flash memory. This unit will be priced at €299 and will be available October 12. In Japan, the 250 and 500 models will be ¥24,900 and ¥29,800 respectively, available October 4.
Rumors of the overhaul started in July around Gamescom, though nothing was announced just then. There’s certainly a strong resemblance between those pictures and the official photos coming out of TGS2012.
Check back for updates as more information on the new model becomes available.
