Just 24 hours after it started, Obsidian’s Kickstarter campaign has hit its $1.1 million goal and is currently sitting just under the $1.5 million mark.
After a countdown last week to build hype, Obsidian debuted the Kickstarter for a completely new RPG not based on any currently existing properties. Project Eternity, as it is currently called, “pays homage to the great Infinity Engine games of years past: Baldur’s Gate, Icewind Dale, and Planescape: Torment,” and uses an iteration of the real-time with pause tactical combat system most modern RPGs make use of.
Smaller game companies have had impressive success with Kickstarter, but there’s always the question of why an established company is resorting to a method like this to get a game going. Obsidian’s basic DNA is built off those Infinity Engine games, and those are the games they want to build, but “it’s been almost impossible to get funding through traditional methods for a game like this.”
In an interview with Kotaku, Obsidian co-founder Chris Avellone said, “I’d much rather have the players be my boss and hear their thoughts for what would be fun than people who might be more distant from the process and the genre and frankly, any long-term attachment to the title.” While the devotion to fans is great and encouraging, it’s interesting to see a developer being so frank about their relationship with publishers. It’s easy to see statements like this causing them trouble in the future as they try to get official funding for mainstream games.
Currently the game is set to come to PC, though the funding needed for a Mac version is just out of reach right now. With nearly a month to go, there’s plenty of time to reach all of the team’s stretch goals.
