Kokuga has certainly come a long way since when we first reported on it. Now, less than a month away from its Japanese release, the follow up from Ikaruga and Radiant Silvergun Director Hiroshi Iuchi is finally starting to gain some traction.
The latest trailer dives further into the gameplay, showing off more 4-player co-op, more intense fire fights, and a never before seen look into the game’s unique card system. Rather than simply pulling the trigger and letting god destroying attacks fly like the bullet hell SHMUPs from Cave, Kokuga’s methodical card based system that adds a random element to the mix.
Each special attack is assigned a card, and only four cards are available at a time. Kokuga‘s pilots will not have their entire arsenals available at all times, only being allowed to draw a new card once another has been used. Each weapon will be useful in unique ways, but players will have to effectively use them to match given situations.
SHMUPS and most run-and-gun games have an established rhythm to them that most dedicated gamers are able to pick up on, and completing them becomes as easy as clockwork rote memorization. Iuchi obviously wants to change that, having gamers rely more on improvisation and quick thinking.
Kokuga will release in Japan later this month, but no American release date has been announced. Do not import the game because the 3DS is region locked, unlike every oher handheld ever made.
