Every year, Microsoft tries to line up several “great” games below the “Summer of Arcade” sale banner. This bundle of titles is meant to represent some of the best downloadable experiences the year has to offer.
In the past, these lineups have been great. We’ve seen games like Braid and Limbo come out of “Summer of Arcade” sales.
This year? Not so much. In fact, this is likely the worst “Summer of Arcade” since the program’s inception. The games released include Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD, Deadlight, Wreckateer, Hybrid and Dust: An Elysian Tail.
Gamasutra had the original scoop, and the fine folks at VG247 broke down the leaderboard marks to show exactly how many people are playing each of these games.
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD – 98,000 players
Deadlight – 53,000 players
Wreckateer – 6629 players (now the worst-selling Summer of Arcade game since 2009)
Hybrid – 12,168
Dust: An Elysian Tail – 32,000
Compare that to Minecraft‘s 3.6 million players and you see a massive disparity between success and, well, not success.
The best the Xbox LIVE Arcade had to offer in 2012, it seems, has already arrived. Both Fez and Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition stand as two of the greatest offerings this year. They launched well before the “Summer of Arcade” began, and they did so to spectacular sales.
