Skies of Arcadia (2)

Avast, mateys! SEGA has just renewed the trademark for their pirate-themed JRPG Skies of Arcadia. The Dreamcast cult-classic has already been ported once to the GameCube, but this recent development has reignited the rumors of a potential HD remake.

Earlier in the year, SEGA claimed that Skies of Arcadia and Shenmue were their most requested games to receive a makeover in HD; but, they refused to comment on whether or not the remakes were actually going to happen. Consider this rumor a little more foreshadowing for an eventual announcement.

Skies of Arcadia is a cult classic revolving around a crew of air-pirates as they swash-buckle through the clouds and battle an evil empire. It’s pretty popular in some circles, but I’ve never really been able to really sink my teeth into it, often getting distracted by other games every time I sit down to finally give it a chance. Maybe the HD facelift is what I need.

No word yet on a Shenmue HD remake, but we’ll be keeping an eye out for it. SEGA is currently updating many of its classic Saturn and Dreamcast games in HD, recently showing HD versions of NiGHTS Into Dreams…, Sonic Adventure 2, and Jet Set Radio off at PAX. Ever since their switch to total digital distribution, updating their classics seems to be the company’s focus.

The GameCube version of Skies of Arcadia: Legends can be purchased on the Internet for a pretty steep price. I’d probably just wait to see if this pans out.
