There’s Android, Windows Phone, iOS and BlackBerry: The powerhouses of today and beyond. And somewhere in the graveyard of mobile operating systems is webOS, a mere shadow of its former self, but it’s there. On Friday, HP announced that its restoration efforts to keep webOS relevant hit a major breakthrough: Open source code for the mobile OS is now available in beta.
It took the company eight months to reach this point, and it may unfortunately all be for not. The once great mobile OS showed promise during the dawn of the smartphone era, but it never achieved the heights it was destined for. It’ll be interesting to see if any hands reach into the webOS pot in the coming months, or if its light will fade once and for all.
