Apple’s Wi-Fi Plus Cellular included in the iOS 6 beta might not just be for downloading apps over your carrier’s data network. According to a report from Apple Insider, Apple is preparing an updated version of AirPlay, possibly called AirPlay Direct, that doesn’t require a Wi-Fi network at all to work.
Basically, you can beam all your favorite tunes directly to AirPlay speakers without the hassle of a bogged down Wi-Fi connection. There’s certainly a convenience factor attached to the feature, which is what Apple specializes in. And beyond that, with iPhone 5s and iPad/iPad minis likely to be on wish lists everywhere this holiday season, you can bet the Cupertino company will try to find ways to fling accessories to consumers. It’s unclear if the alleged upgrade will be audio only, though it’s likely stuff like video and gaming will be excluded.
