An alien force is invading Earth with hostile intent, and we’ve just barely been able to pool our resources and scrape together a resistance. Millions of men will be led into battle to fend for their home world, and many thousands will die. Do you have what it takes to lead the assault, Commander?
Seriously dude, we’ve already handled the Reapers, wiped out the Covenant and destroyed an endless army of giant acid-spewing ants. I doubt these guys will be any tougher. It’s becoming a kind of running gag with how many games are basing their marketing strategy on this idea.
Regardless, Fireaxis has what should be a monster hit on their hands. XCOM: Enemy Unknown combines the cinematic excitement of an over-the-shoulder third-person shooter with the thinking process of a hardcore strategy a game. It’s a formula that should ring very well once award season rolls around. Hopefully sales figures will follow suit.
If Optimus Prime narrating the latest Casualties of War trailer doesn’t get you pumped, I’m afraid we’re gonna have to take your pulse.
I remember discussing with a friend several years ago that Valkyria Chronicles spin on XCOM would be the future of the series long before this title was announced. I didn’t actually think anyone was listening at the time. You’re welcome, Fireaxis.
XCOM: Enemy Unknown will be released for the PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 October 9th. Mark your calendars and enlist for yet another battle with yet another race/species wanting our planet for whatever reason.
