Windows 8 Pro Expected to Cost $199 After $69.99 Promotional Period

A source familiar with Microsoft’s plans has confirmed to The Verge that Windows 8 Pro will cost $199 when the $69.99 promotional price expires on January 31, 2013. The company will also offer a $69.99 upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8 Pro, which will rise to $99.99 on January 31.

Alternatively, existing Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 users can purchase a digital upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for just $39.99. The only difference is, because it’s a digital edition, you won’t receive a DVD, and you’ll be required to download the software from Microsoft’s website instead.

Luckily for those of you who purchased a PC after June 2, you can upgrade for just $14.99.

To Mac OS X users who paid just $19.99 to upgrade to Mountain Lion last month, those prices probably seem pretty extortionate. However, let’s not forget that Apple releases a new desktop operating system every 12 months, whereas Microsoft’s last Windows release was way back in 2009.
