Japanese publishers love their countdown sites. Square Enix has a new one up, set to expire in just under a week (as of this writing), teasing what seems to be a sequel to the handheld title The World Ends with You. The URL includes the string “subaseka.” The Japanese title of TWEWY is Subarashiki Kono Sekai, and this contracting of words is common in Japanese usage, making this a likely bet.
If that wasn’t enough, the image depicted on the site (above) is a perfect match for the stylized outline of Shibuya shown on the cover of the first game.
The World Ends with You, which debuted in 2008, is an action RPG for the Nintendo DS. The game most notably uses Tokyo’s Shibuya district as its setting, pulling many elements of the game from it, including the art and things like food and cellphones. At the time it was a welcome departure from Kingdom Hearts and the Final Fantasy series. The interesting battle system won critics over using the DS’ unique features; the art and story were well-received as well.
Andriasang notes that TWEWY and Kingdom Hearts producer Tetsuya Nomura has been hinting at a sequel for some time and that characters from the game appeared in the recent Kingdom Hearts 3D. Main character Rhyme was voiced in the game, according to Nomura, out of consideration for the future of the TWEWY series.
