Just when you thought zombie games were dying, they rise again.
The popular Arma II mod, DayZ–arguably more popular than the game itself–is officially being developed as a standalone title.
The announcement was made by mod creator Deal Hall via the mod’s Tumblr page. The game will be developed, with Hall as the lead, by Arma II developer Bohemia Interactive.
Hall outlines the development plan for the game and the future of the mod:
Development and updates of the mod will continue in parallel with the development of the game, so anyone who is playing the mod now will be able to continue to do so. The project will follow the Minecraft development model; fast iterations with the community alpha available for a heavily discounted price.
This announcement shows good sense on the part of the Czech developer, realizing just how popular this mod has become and supporting full-featured development. The fact that the mod isn’t being pulled from development outright is also good news; stopping the mod would likely kill the game, too.
It will be interesting to see how the team applies the Minecraft model to DayZ and how that affects fan reception.
