Apple is reportedly set to announce the iPhone 5 — and possibly the iPad Mini — during an alleged press event on September 12. There’s been a lot of hullabaloo over the company’s reported plans to switch from 30-pin Dock Connector to an 8-pin Dock Connector. That move, we fear, will alienate every Apple customer who already owns iPhone, iPad and iPod accessories with the 30-pin dock. It gets worse.
A report from iMore on Monday suggests that Apple will update its entire portfolio of iOS devices with support for the smaller 8-pin connector. That would mean a new iPad mini, the iPhone 5, a new iPod touch and a refreshed iPod nano, all with the smaller dock connector. It certainly makes sense, especially if there are speed improvements or a magsafe connection.
Hopefully Apple has plans to offer a free adapter for older accessories and devices that use a 30-pin dock connector. That would only be fair to each of its existing customers. Still, we’re willing to bet Apple will milk a few bucks out of every customers by providing the adapter for a small fee.
