Army of Two: The Devil’s Cartel Announced by EA

Because two servings of gruff manliness just wasn’t enough, EA will be publishing yet another game in the co-op third person shooter series Army of Two this coming March.

The series has earned its small ironic audience thanks to the unapologetic moral bankruptcy of the the not-so-subtle bromance. Beyond its over the top storytelling, the gameplay has never really moved pst being pretty standard fare amongst a constantly growing market of co-op shooters.

The latest in the series, subtitled The Devil’s Cartel, does away with the established traditions, promising a “more intense, mature, and grittier” tone starring new pair of star crossed PMC contractors, simply named Alpha and Bravo, who find themselves swept up in the Mexican Drug War.

Tossing aside the ridiculous atmosphere from the previous games is a bit of a bummer, but the latest sequel does have two things going for it. First, it will be powered by Battlefield 3‘s Frostbite engine, making murder for profit more beautiful than ever before. Second, talented members of Visceral Games, of Dead Space fame, have been brought aboard to help EA Montreal get the project done right. Visceral’s executive producer Julian Beak claims: couple’s

“We wanted to refresh the Army of Two franchise for a new generation of action gamers, and at the same time, stay true to the core concept that really made the first two games fan favorites. With meaningful, seamless co-op gameplay at its core and explosive new tag-team features, gamers will have to work together tactically and strategically as they push through a city dominated by one of Mexico’s deadliest drug cartels.”

Once you start attaching words like “mature” to a series known for men hiding behind flaming skulls performing choreographed handshakes while carelessly murdering  everyone in their path, I throw up a red flag. Still, Frostbite and Visceral Games could be the needed ingredients to final get this C-grade franchise off the ground.

Army of Two: The Devil’s Cartel will be released in March 2013 for the Xbox360, PlayStation 3 and PC.
