The Borderlands franchise has made the jump from sleeper-hit to “the real deal” over the course of a single entry. Gearbox’s first-person shooter/loot-heavy RPG hybrid Borderlands 2 now ranks at number three on Take-Two’s all time pre-order list.
Last weekend’s sale on the PC version, sponsored by Amazon, took the selling point to below $50 and might have stacked the numbers a little bit, but the hype surrounding the game since its announcement seems genuine enough.
In fact, CEO Strauss Zelnick claims the only games surpassing Borderlands 2 on Take-Two’s official count are Grand Theft Auto IV and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, leaving the little franchise that could in some pretty impressive company.
Pre-orders didn’t used to carry the amount of weight they do now when those games were released, and ever since publishers began stocking their packages with a ridiculous amount of swag, pre-orders have been on the rise. But still, going toe-to-toe with one of gaming’s premier franchises is no easy task. This game is going to be huge.
Borderlands 2 will be released in America on September 18th for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. An uncensored version will be released internationally three days later.
