I love the Nexus 7 and, while the original case was selling on eBay for as much as $100, I opted to buy a $10 third-party model from Amazon recently. That’s not the only accessory Google has planned for its tablet, however.
According to a leak from Nordic Hardware, Google will soon launch a landscape dock for the Nexus 7 that acts as a “perfectly-angled” stand that includes a 3.5mm headphone jack and a microUSB charging port. Google is reportedly planning to launch the device on August 24th for $49.99. It doesn’t appear that the dock will support HDMI-out, which would be a welcome addition, but that certainly wouldn’t deter me from buying the accessory. I’d love to keep the Nexus 7 propped up on my desk and charging at all times, but as it stands (pun intended) it’s charging on my bedside table.
Here’s the catch, though. The Nexus 7 doesn’t support landscape mode on the homescreen, so you can’t just leave it standing on your desk in that mode — otherwise it’s just going to sit there displaying a sideways image. Is it possible the dock will launch with some sort of patch that enables landscape typing, too? We hope so, otherwise it’s really only good for propping up the tablet while watching movies or for viewing other applications that support landscape mode.
Google is also expected to begin selling an “ASUS Premium Cover” in four different colors (red, orange, black and white) on August 31st for $39.99 each. There also appears to be an ASUS Travel Cover in the pipeline, which will launch in six colors, although pricing and a release date for those cases weren’t revealed.
