Verizon Reportedly “Retiring” Alltel’s Data Network in January 2013

Verizon reportedly plans on shutting down the Alltel data network that came with its acquisition of the regional carrier in 2009. The decommissioning is said to begin around January 2013 according to a purported document obtained by Droid-Life.

Once Alltel’s data network is retired, remaining customers’ service will be limited to phone calls and text messages. In an effort to make this transition smooth for customers, the alleged document claims that Verizon will have exclusive offers specifically targeting Alltel castaways. If you’re an Alltel customer who has a thirst for data, it appears that your mobile web surfing days could be numbered, so enjoy it while it lasts.
