While Google’s Android platform is making several advancements in mobile gaming, the Google TV platform has been left out to dry. However, this draught may soon come to an end, as cloud-based game streaming company OnLive is coming to Google TV. Already integrated into VIZIO’s Co-Star, the OnLive app will make the game streaming service compatible with all Google TV devices.
If you’re unfamiliar with what OnLive is, it’s a non-subscription based service that allows users to play high-end desktop games via PC, Mac, tablet or by using its free software. In addition to its software-based playing options, OnLive offers its own game system that connects directly to HDTVs for a more traditional console-like experience.
Bringing OnLive to Google TV could potentially breathe new life into Google’s struggling platform by virtually transforming Google TV receivers into a high-end game console.
Details on when the OnLive app will release for Google TV remain unknown. Google has only stated that it is “on its way.” While we expect the app itself to be free of charge, neither Google nor OnLive has confirmed this. Hopefully we won’t have to wait too long for more details to surface.
