Google on Thursday released a fresh update for its Google Earth iOS application that provides 3D imagery. It’s particularly noteworthy because Apple has decided to replace Google’s Maps application in iOS 6 with its own, which will also feature 3D maps.

The update to version 7.0.0 includes a “Tour Guide” feature for browsing through your “favorite cities, historic landmarks and natural wonders.” 3D maps are available for Los Angeles, Boston, San Francisco, Geneva and Rome in this release, but Google said it will be adding new cities in the coming weeks. The update is only available for the iPhone 4S or the iPad 2 and new iPad.
