The premiere Nexus 7 commercial is charming, clever and — most importantly — honest. Watching a man and his son use the WiFi-only tablet in the woods must’ve had a lot of people going, “Huh?”, at least until the last moment when the cute, surprise-twist ending explained all. (If you haven’t seen it yet, I won’t spoil it for you. But check it out, embedded below.)
Compared to last month’s Surface commercial, the Google ad is a win. While the former was an artsy, very appealing look at the new Microsoft tablet, it didn’t really showcase any of its features or explain what this touchscreen, keyboard-rocking device would actually do for everyday consumers. When Apple launched the first iPad, the most important thing it did (and still does) was show people how they could do use this then-category-defying device.
When you’re talking about consumer electronics, focusing on the experience is never the wrong thing to do. And to be honest, I think I like the Nexus 7 commercial best of all. It tugs at the heartstrings without being cheesy, and the ending is — dare I say — even a little self-deprecating. LOVE that.
