Whenever the folks in Cupertino take the online store down the speculation begins. Could Mountain Lion be ready to roar? All signs were pointing towards a July 25th launch, but perhaps Apple has decide to pull the switch early, or is merely making updates in preparation for its arrival. Either way, we’ll keep you posted on what’s different what it comes back.

UPDATE: After five hours and 58 minutes of downtime, the Apple Online Store is now back. However, as far as we can tell, there’s nothing new. At least not on the front end. If you spot anything, be sure to let us know.
UPDATE X2: It appears Apple has actually introduced a new service that allows U.S. customers to receive text message updates for their order status.
Apple Notifications is a text-message-based alerts service designed to keep you up-to-date on your shipment and/or pickup notification status. In addition to standard email notifications, you can also request text message updates when you’re in Checkout. The number of messages you’ll receive will vary depending on the orders you placed.
Supported carriers include Alltel, AT&T, Boost Mobile, Cricket, Nextel, Sprint, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular, Verizon Wireless, and Virgin Mobile USA.
