Microsoft announced its Windows 8 upgrade promotion on Monday. Once Windows 8 launches, the promotion will run through January 31st, 2013. Customers will have the option to upgrade from Windows XP, Vista or 7 to Windows 8 Pro for the price of $39.99 directly from Windows.com.
Customers will also have the option to add Media Center to their upgrade free of charge by using the “add features” option within Windows 8 Pro after installing their upgrade.
Microsoft’s Upgrade Assistant will provide a step-by-step guide to help walk customers through the entire purchase and installation process. It will also check to see if your PC is compatible with Windows 8, as well as provide a detailed compatibility report that outlines any issues that may need to be addressed before or after upgrading.
In addition to checking hardware compatibility, the Upgrade Assistant will also review any installed applications to ensure that they are compatible with Windows 8.
For those of you who are looking to upgrade online, here is a breakdown of what can be transferred between older versions of Windows when upgrading to Windows 8 Pro:
- Windows 7 (everything)
- Windows Vista (settings and personal files)
- Windows XP (personal files only)
Customers who upgrade online also have the option to create a bootable USB or .ISO file, which can be burned to a DVD to use as a backup. However, customers will also have the option to purchase a backup DVD for an additional $15 plus shipping and handling.
Finally, for those of you who prefer to purchase Windows 8 Pro from a retailer, the packaged DVD version of the operating system will be available for $69.99 during Microsoft’s promotional period.
